CHANGING HORSES: After 27 years of sponsoring the International Polo event that takes place each year at Great Windsor Park, Cartier has now opted to support a more low-key affair — the Queen’s Cup Polo Tournament — which took place on Sunday at same venue.
Queen Elizabeth, who has been on a merry-go-round of Jubilee-related trips and celebrations, was the spectator of honor at the event along with Prince Philip. At the end of the day, he whisked his wife away in the royal Range Rover after she handed the cup to Dubai, which triumphed in the final chukka.
Guests in the Cartier tent included Kenneth Branagh, Lady Frederick Windsor, Ioan Gruffudd, Katie Melua, Dita Von Teese, Douglas Booth, Olympia Campbell, Lily Cooper — formerly known as Lily Allen, and the Olympic gold medal winner Edwin Moses.
“I will root for whoever looks the hottest,” said Melua. “My fiancé isn't here with me today, so I am allowed to do that.”
Melua, who is going on tour this week, will be performing at the Hampton Court Palace on Friday.
Lady Frederick Windsor, also known as Sophie Winkleman, had more serious aspirations. “I'm very excited to see Cambiaso play for Dubai,” she said, referring to Adolfo Cambiaso, who is the number-one ranked polo player in the world, with a whopping 10-goal handicap.
Booth, who flew in from New York on Saturday, was grateful for the sunshine — and the rest. “I'm here to have a good time. It would be great to stay in a place for a little longer than I normally do,” he said.
Last year, Cartier signed a three-year deal — beginning in 2012 — to sponsor The Queen’s Cup Polo Tournament, which takes place every June at Guards.
