COUNTERFEIT ME NOT: The U.S. Customs and Border Protection hit the jackpot last month. Customs and Border Officers at the Port of New York/New Jersey said Wednesday that they nabbed 537 cartons of designer knockoff handbags and other accessories. According to officials, the shipment of imported wares had been declared as “plastics” on entry documents. That apparently raised eyebrows.
Upon further examination, officers found a stash of counterfeit bags, belts and wallets bearing fake Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Michael Kors trademarks. If real, the massive haul would have been valued at $20 million.
“Preventing the entry of counterfeit items is crucial to protecting consumers as well as the economy of the United States,” said Robert Perez, director of New York field operations.
