Franca Sozzani Named Goodwill Ambassador

The Italian Vogue editor in chief has been appointed to the post of ambassador for the Fashion 4 Development program within the United Nations.

U.N. IN VOGUE: There may be wacky rumors of an ambassadorship for Anna Wintour one day, but it appears that her Italian counterpart, Franca Sozzani, snagged that title first — sort of. The Italian Vogue editor in chief has become the premier goodwill ambassador of Fashion 4 Development — a two-year-old platform that aims to help reach the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals by encouraging fashion leaders to work on sustainable development initiatives.

On Thursday, Sozzani — whose May/June issue of L’Uomo Vogue celebrated Africa and featured U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the cover — is slated to attend a meeting and roundtable discussion at the U.N.’s Manhattan headquarters — expected to draw a mix of designers, retailers and other fashion executives, as well as U.N. officials.

“The event in New York is very exciting because it’s the first time that the U.N. and fashion have come together,” said Fashion 4 Development’s cofounder and global chair Evie Evangelou. She added that its aim is “to increase economic levels, decrease poverty and hunger, and help empower women in these countries.”
