Big Response Furthers Footwear Cares Mission

NEW YORK — Two Ten Footwear Foundation’s community service initiative, National Footwear Cares Month, kicked off with a bang last week.

This year’s effort features a dramatically expanded lineup of service projects and a new title sponsor, Amazon Fashion.

“The variety of ways in which the footwear industry will make an impact over the next month is extraordinary,” said Two Ten President Neal Newman. “National Footwear Cares Month is our industry’s way of saying thank you to our communities, our schools, our local nonprofit organizations and the generations of families that support the footwear industry.”

After a successful inaugural Footwear Cares Week in 2013, Two Ten extended the program to span the entire month of April. More than 6,000 volunteers across the U.S. already have committed to a service project.

During the first three days of the initiative, there were several notable projects. In Seattle, Amazon Fashion, Nordstrom and Topline Corp. packed peas and dried pinto beans, which helped nonprofit food bank distributor Northwest Harvey provide 6,884 meals.

Keds organized and staged enough food at the Greater Boston Food Bank to help give out 14,194 meals for families throughout the greater Boston area.

And Michael Kors prepared and packaged more than 3,500 meals for distribution by God’s Love We Deliver in New York.

“Participating in Footwear Cares is important because it enables us to work together as a team and support a good cause,” said Anna Bakst, president of footwear and accessories for Michael Kors. “This is the second year we’ve [taken part], and we really enjoy it.”

Amazon executives also were enthusiastic about their involvement in the program.

“The footwear industry’s support for this now-annual event is extraordinary. The eagerness of shoe companies to come together to provide much-needed aid in communities throughout the U.S. — the same communities who support the footwear industry year after year — is very gratifying,” Stan Friedlander, GMM of footwear for Amazon Fashion, said in a statement.
