DEBORAH’S CHOICE: Deborah Needleman finally has her style director for T: The New York Times Style Magazine in Kate Lanphear, the former Elle style director who recently vied for her new boss’ old job at WSJ. magazine.
Lanphear, easily recognizable for her asymmetric tress, is American-born but started out at Australian fashion magazines before returning Stateside to work at Harper’s Bazaar. She was promoted to style director at Elle in 2008 shortly after Nina Garcia left the magazine. Last year, she got restless and was one of many candidates trying to succeed Needleman at WSJ. When that didn’t work out — The Wall Street Journal instead picked a neighbor at Hearst Tower, Kristina O’Neill, the former executive editor of Harper’s Bazaar — Lanphear was followed by persistent rumors she’d eventually land at T. She left Elle in November and has been around and about since — insiders speculate to finish up conflicting freelance styling projects that would be verboten at the Times.
Lanphear’s hire, effective immediately, was confirmed by the Times Monday afternoon after it broke on social media. Already Monday, Lanphear was making the rounds at the pre-fall shows with Needleman.
