PRESS CRISIS: Le Monde shareholders, including Pierre Bergé, tapped Gilles van Kote as the interim director replacing Natalie Nougayrède, who announced her resignation from the French daily on Wednesday.
“A new director will be appointed by the end of the year,” the shareholder triumvirate, which also includes Xavier Niel, a French billionaire Internet entrepreneur, and Matthieu Pigasse, a French banker and media tycoon, said in a letter to the publication's staff on Thursday. It was published in Le Monde’s Friday issue, dated May 16, as well.
Van Kote is vice president of the supervisory board of Le Monde and a journalist at the paper.
Nougayrède’s resignation came after several weeks of crisis at the title, with seven out of its 10 editors in chief resigning last week. The bones of contention were about reforms for the paper’s transition to digital and Nougayrède’s management style.
Bergé declined to comment.
In 2011 Le Monde launched the “M” weekend supplement, which has extensive lifestyle coverage, under its late director Erik Izraelewic. The paper also covers fashion in its culture pages.
Due to the turmoil, a revamping of the print edition initially set for June has been put off until the end of September.
