NOT PARTYING HEARTY: When Condé Nast kicked off the holiday party season with a pre-Thanksgiving luncheon at the Four Seasons, it looked for a brief second like the magazine world was ready to be reintroduced to the good old days. There, 81 Condé Nast executives, editors and publishers returned to the power eatery for its annual holiday party for the first time in four years. The holiday magazine party was back!
Then again…there are still some messy issues for the magazine industry to contend with. Like: the economy; Europe; ad pages falling off the cliff at a 7 percent clip in the fourth quarter after a not-so-bad start to the year. Is there actually a good reason to revive big and splashy holiday parties?
Not everyone seems to agree on the answer.
For a fourth straight year, Hearst has called off its holiday party in the tower (“While we are not hosting a company-wide holiday party this year, Hearst conducted its annual charity drive for the United Way, where we continued to match employee donations and offer days off for donating,” said a spokesman). Staffers at Hearst’s O, The Oprah Magazine aren’t throwing one either, but “everyone is getting a bonus day off,” said a spokeswoman. Time Inc. is, once again, doing a catchall party in its building. Meredith, the publisher of titles More, Ladies Home Journal and newly acquired Every Day with Rachael Ray, is also doing one big party in its new office space on Third Avenue. The Atlantic, which in the past seemed to invite just about every New York media type to its annual party, is skipping out this year (“No time to pull one off this year,” said the magazine’s publisher, Jay Lauf).
Some magazines are going all out (Vogue at the Boom Boom Room; Glamour at Mister H and The Electric Room) and others are not (Lucky is going to a bowling alley, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar are having “small, informal toasts to staff” and T and The New York Times Magazine are likewise having “small, unpublicized parties,” said their spokespeople).
Ho! Ho? Ho…
