WORDS OF WINTOUR: Anna Wintour has dabbled openly in U.S. politics, having hosted big-money fund-raisers for President Barack Obama, in addition to producing cover treatments of Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Now American Vogue’s editor in chief is sharing a few opinions about the always-lively world of Italian politics. Wintour slammed Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in an interview in Saturday’s La Repubblica newspaper. “I am disgusted. I have no other words. I am disgusted and embarrassed: How can Italy tolerate Silvio Berlusconi and his bevy of girls?” said Wintour in a Q&A story that, interestingly, appeared in the paper’s politics pages, not the fashion section.
Wintour said that Italy is going through “what is in effect a dictatorship” and that she would love to see women protesting in the streets against Berlusconi during fashion week. Wintour went on to say that during the Prada show earlier in the week, she wondered about the dichotomy of the current climate. “On one side, there is the Made in Italy, the designers, the great creations that credit you around the world and that have no equal. On the other side, there is a political reality that is so compromised. How can you tolerate all this?”
