THE WHATSAPP REASONING: Facebook’s $19 billion deal to buy mobile-messaging firm WhatsApp is being seen as a data play that will help the social network better target its advertising efforts.

NASTY GAL ON THE MOVE: Nasty Gal, the rapidly growing e-commerce site, added former Lululemon executive Sheree Waterson to its ranks and is planning to open its first brick-and-mortar store.

MASHABLE’S NEW FUNDS: Mashable, the social media and online news firm, closed on a $14 million series A funding round led by Tribune Digital Ventures. The company plans to use the funding for investments in video, long-form journalism and international expansion, as well as for growing its Brand Lab storytelling platform.

ISAORA GOES E-COMMERCE: Men’s contemporary line Isaora is getting out of the wholesale business to focus on e-commerce. The e-commerce-only model reduces prices by up to 40 percent.

BUZZFEED’S FUTURE: Can videos of dancing cats and investigative stories on the conflict in Ukraine coexist on the same Web site? That was just one of the many questions BuzzFeed founder and chief executive officer Jonah Peretti deigned to tackle at a Q&A in New York.

CONNECTING WITH POWA: London-based Powa Technologies unveiled PowaTag, a service that helps retailers to connect with consumers and to marry customers’ online and offline retail experiences. The company said 240 retailers and brands, including Carrefour and Waitrose, have already signed up to the service, which allows customers to scan and buy items they see in stores, on television advertisements or in print media.

SUZY MENKES JUMPS SHIP:
Journalist Suzy Menkes is heading to Condé Nast International, where she will become a critic and reporter for all the international Vogue Web sites. She leaves the Paris-based International New York Times after 26 years.
