The scene backstage at Calvin Klein’s spring show on Thursday afternoon was a whirlwind: not least because the undertaking was running 30 to 45 minutes behind schedule.

“This is my first runway show,” Chloë Moretz confided amid the very carefully controlled chaos. “Is it always this crazy? I’m wearing Calvin Klein, and I feel very Calvin Klein with the loose waves in my hair and everything. I have worn him before, for shoots and things. But this is crazy. It’s so hectic: Look, there’s a naked lady. Changing!”

Moretz gawked at a nearby Hanne Gaby Odiele, who noted the attention and was unruffled.

Uma Thurman wore a royal blue long-sleeve dress, also the work of Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa, and was similarly nonplussed. “I’ve worn Calvin Klein all my life,” Thurman said. “I think he designed my first Oscar gown…or some big event. I still have it somewhere. I don’t do all the shows in New York, I really only go to my friends’ things. Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, you know. This is my first and only show this week. I’m just taking it easy and enjoying it.”

Ashley Greene appeared amid a swirl of flashbulbs and was immediately submerged in television interviews. “I love Calvin Klein,” Greene grinned, as if on cue. Other front-row attendees were a little more relaxed.

“I’ve known Francisco for quite some time,” Naomi Watts offered. “You know, the night I met Liev [Schreiber] at the Met ball…”

A passerby familiar with the tale interjected that this might be the most romantic story they’d ever heard.
“I know, very romantic,” Watts continued. “The night I met Liev, I was wearing a dress designed by Francisco. So they keep inviting me, because I was a success, I guess….But, obviously, Francisco is very special to me.”

Out front, in the bleached-white and brightly lit space, Lara Stone was waiting for the show to begin. Visible lately in Calvin Klein TV and billboard ads across the country, Stone was sitting this runway season out. The model was wearing a tightly knit orange frock and held hands with husband David Walliams.

“It’s funny to be on this side of it,” Stone said, meaning the runway. “I’m excited to watch it for once.”
