On Tuesday evening, Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock showcased their spring Vena Cava collection by way of an intimate dinner at MPD in the Meatpacking District, with their close friends and muses (Tennessee Thomas, Stephanie LaCava, Kate Young, Nora Zhetener, Annie Clark) modeling the clothes. Inspired by Forties films they watched in their hotel room while on a research trip to Vietnam in March, the lineup featured cropped jackets paired with high-waisted trousers, a smocked graphic print dress, open weave sweaters and even a maxidress that was printed with botanicals of marijuana leaves. Hand-whip stitching details appeared on the straps of tops and dresses for a crafty-yet-modern twist. But the biggest news here is the launch of Vena Cava handbags — functional and chic, and retailing from $275 to $550 — that the designers say are purposefully nondescript.
