Ariel Pink Plays Proenza Schouler After Party

TOUGH ACT, MEET TOUGH ROOM: Earlier this week, the music Web site Pitchfork ran a lengthy profile of Los Angeles shamble rock provocateur Ariel Pink in which he told writer Andy Beta, “I really wanted to make the worst thing, the thing that even people who liked bad, terrible music wouldn’t like, the stuff that people would ignore, always.” Put on or not, the singer mostly got his wish Wednesday night at Proenza Schouler’s after party at Irving Plaza. As Pink and his band played around midnight, a group of only about 50 diehards surrounded the stage. On the club’s second floor, a typical, if muffled, fashion week party unfolded, undisturbed with Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, Kelly Sawyer, Jen Brill, Jenna Lyons, Philip Crangi and Olympia Scarry all in attendance. Dressed in a sequined dress and matching headband and a cape, Pink was undaunted. “If I were a rich man,” he sang to the crowd during a break between songs, aping the “Fiddler On The Roof” songbook. “I’d buy up all your good looks.”
